What is Pilates? Pilates is a safe, low impact exercise system which promotes spinal fitness and addresses muscular & postural imbalances in the body. Joseph Pilates developed his system of floor work & spring based apparatus exercises in the 1920s. Focus is placed on breath, alignment & controlled, precise movement. It is an effective system for physical conditioning, injury rehabilitation & prevention.
Pilates is an adaptable and intelligent movement form that is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Benefits include; improved posture, core strength & stability, increased muscle tone, joint mobility & stability, flexibility, body awareness, co-ordination & increased stamina.
Studio Pilates uses a range of apparatus (including the reformer, wunda chair, cadillac, spring board, high barrel, spine corrector, arcs & small props), that allow for dynamic weight bearing & support correct alignment. Pilates targets core musculature, including the abdomen, pelvic floor, hips & spine. Exercises develop a balance of strength & flexibility around the joints, facilitating better joint position & articulation, improving balance, & stimulating functional movement patterns which re-educate the neuromuscular system.
How do I get started? Your Pilates journey begins with an Initial Assessment & follow up Private Class. During these classes we will design a programme to suit your needs. You can then continue classes in a Private, Duet or Small Group class (4:1). Clients with prior Pilates experience may only need one Private before joining a group or duet.
Privates Within a Private session you can explore the Pilates Method in more depth. You will progress more quickly & your instructor will be better able to assist you through more complex & detailed movements, working to achieve your goals more effectively. Compliment your studio or mat classes with a fortnightly, monthly or occasional Private class to deepen your knowledge & experience. Private classes are recommended for clients with complex conditions, post surgery & anytime your needs change or you have had a break from Pilates.
Duets A fun way for friends or partners to explore Pilates together! You can work independently if your needs are different, or together at the same pace.
Small group (4:1) Each client works at their own pace on an individual programme using a variety of apparatus.
Pre & Postnatal Classes Pilates is a safe form of exercise for both pre & post natal women. Pilates focuses on balancing & strengthening the pelvic muscles which are challenged through pregnancy. Changing posture & imbalances can be addressed to help you prepare for childbirth & exercise safely during pregnancy & after. Studio Pilates Classes will give you a personalised programme throughout pregnancy, & assist your postnatal journey back into your body.
